On April 10, the Michigan State University Board of Trustees presented 320 now-graduated seniors with the Board of Trustees’ Award, recognizing their achievement of maintaining a 4.0 grade point average throughout their college careers. 48 of those recognized were Lyman Briggs College students. LBC represents 4-5% of MSU's graduating class, yet 15% of its awardees with 4.0 GPAs.

Isaac Record, teaching professor of science and society at Lyman Briggs College, was selected as Michigan State University's nominee for the 2026 Distinguished Professor of the Year Award, a prestigious statewide honor recognizing excellence in undergraduate education across institutions in the Michigan Association of State Universities.

Varun Varre is a senior graduating with a degree in human biology and a minor in health promotion; he is graduating with high honors and received the MSU Board of Trustees’ Award for maintaining a cumulative GPA of 4.0 throughout his college career. In anticipation of the Lyman Briggs commencement ceremony on Sunday, May 3, we’ve asked Varun to look back at his time at LBC and answer some questions about his experience.

Michigan State University has nominated five students for the nationally competitive Goldwater Scholarship, including Briggsie junior Erin Visser. The Goldwater Foundation provides approximately 50 scholarships each year to sophomores and juniors who are committed to a research career in STEM.

On Tuesday, February 17, 2026, nearly 40 Lyman Briggs College students shared their research through posters and online sessions at the 19th annual LBC Research Showcase. The event is a celebration of science communication and community, touching on dozens of disciplines and showcasing the curiosity, impressive knowledge, and hard work of LBC students.

LB alumnus Brian Bielecki captured striking photographs during a trip to Mole National Park in Ghana. One of his photos, a detailed portrait of an aging bull elephant, won several awards in the 2025 Global Focus Photo Contest, coordinated by the MSU Office of International Studies and Programs.

Clausell Mathis, assistant professor of physics and physics education in Michigan State University’s Lyman Briggs College and Department of Teacher Education, has been named a Winter 2026 Fellow of the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT). He is one of only two educators nationwide to receive this honor.
