We’re always eager to welcome alumni back to Holmes Hall, as well as to connect on alums’ home turf. Below are a few opportunities to volunteer at Lyman Briggs, in an in-person capacity.
Volunteer In Person
In-Person Volunteer Opportunities
Classroom Panels
Share your professional journey as part of a panel in an LBC course
Open to all alumni
Students in Briggs are currently exploring careers within some of our courses! We are looking for alumni panelists who are employed in scientific fields for classroom sessions. Pre-determined panel questions would be provided to you ahead of time. Please consider sharing your professional journey with current students to pique their curiosity about various careers.
Expectations:
- Review a set of pre-determined questions.
- Attend a specific session of a course in person, in Holmes Hall.
- Provide candid advice to the class about your personal career journey.
Evaluate Student Research
Evaluate Research Presentations at the LBC Research Showcase
Open to all alumni and community partners
East spring semester, we invite LBC students to present their research conducted for classes, honors options, and with faculty, in a special Briggs-only showcase. Student presentations and posters are evaluated for awards, by a team of alums and community partners representing a variety of fields. The event is a great way to learn about the research going on across campus and to witness Briggsies’ scientific knowledge and communication skills.
Expectations:
- Attend the Research Showcase (typically in February, one weeknight)
- Review online presentations and listen to assigned in-person presenters
- Select top candidates for research presentation awards
Informational Interviews
Take part in a longer one-on-one conversation about your career
Open to all alumni
One way that students explore career as part of some of our courses, is through completing an informational interview assignment with a Briggs alum. This interview would be a 30-60 minute conversation with an alum to learn more about different careers in the sciences, gain a better understanding of how to pursue those careers, and begin to develop their network through connecting with industry professionals.
Expectations:
- Participate in a 60-minute meeting with student sometime in a set two-week timeframe
- Share career journey with students.
- May be virtual or in-person.
Host a Briggs Alumni Workplace Visit
Host ten students in your workplace for job shadowing
Open to all alumni
Do you work in a place that would allow ten students to come and shadow you for an hour or two? Briggs Alumni Workplace Visits give LBC students the opportunity to get out of the classroom and into the real world, to better understand career paths after college and meet some of our accomplished alumni.
Past visits included:
- Briggs alum Dr. Jeffrey VanWingen took students on a tour of his medical practice. He described what owning a practice entails, listed the unique job responsibilities, and shared some lessons he learned along the way.
- Briggs alum Ashima Saigal invited students to her home. She shared how her career journey started in a computer consulting firm then evolved to her establishing her own database company using meditation and yoga.
- Briggs alum Dr. Molly Crissman invited students to visit her medical office, opening with a day-in-the-life presentation, followed by tours of an imaging lab and surgery center.
