Welcome to Lyman Briggs College
Welcome! I have had the privilege of being a faculty member in Lyman Briggs College for almost 20 years, and to be dean for 5 years. I'm delighted to share LBC's distinctive mission and impacts with you.
Since 1967, Lyman Briggs College has served as a national model for integrating the natural sciences with the humanities and social sciences in a distinct curriculum and a supportive community. Our approach prepares students not only as scientists and health practitioners, but as informed leaders and global citizens who understand the sciences in their societal contexts.
As a degree-granting, undergraduate, residential college in the sciences, we offer our 2,000 students the personalized experience and small class sizes of a liberal arts college along with the resources and opportunities of a leading research university. Our first- (and many second-) year students live and learn together in Holmes Hall, which also houses our classrooms, labs, and faculty and advisor offices. Students and alumni consistently name the community as one of the strongest elements of the college.
LBC faculty are always innovating. Many use flipped classrooms and alternative assessment strategies that emphasize development, collaboration, curiosity, and reflection. We emphasize interdisciplinary learning, high-impact learning experiences, research opportunities, and developing communication and collaboration skills. Our faculty and staff earn national recognition from organizations like the Council for Advancement and Support of Education, the American Physical Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the Fulbright Program. Their commitment to teaching innovation and student learning has influenced instruction across MSU and beyond.
Our students are deeply engaged learners: about 30% engage with study abroad, 120 serve as learning assistants each semester, and many present award-winning research. Although LBC students make up only 4% of MSU undergraduates, they earn 17% of the University’s awards for perfect GPAs upon graduation. Within six months of graduation, over 94% are employed or pursue further education in fields ranging from health professions to environmental science, supported by a foundation of curiosity, collaboration, and innovation.
