Welcome, Spartan! I am proud to welcome you to our community of science-minded students, faculty, advisors, and staff. You’re about to enter a college that affords you all the opportunities of a world-class research university and the dedication, connections, and support of a small undergraduate-focused college.

As you engage with science in its human, social, and global contexts, we invite you to follow your curiosity. You never know which research experience, course, or extracurricular experience will be the one that you look back on in 20 years as a defining moment in your life.

Reach out to your LBC community, ask hard questions, and get involved in creating your college experience.

Welcome home!

First-Year Student Checklist for Briggsies

Welcome, Briggsie! You've been admitted to Lyman Briggs College and paid your acceptance fee. We look forward to working with you!

You will need to complete steps in the New Student Orientation process and complete LBC-specific orientation sessions before meeting with LBC academic advisors or enrolling in courses later in the summer. Please complete the following tasks in the approximate order listed below.

Phase One: Complete Forms and Assessments

  1. Complete the Access and Technology Survey.
  2. Complete the Immunization Form.
  3. Complete the Math Placement Assessment. Your Math Placement Assessment must be completed before your LBC academic advising and course enrollment. You are able to retake your assessment after a four-week waiting period, if desired. Please make sure you take the assessment in early May.
  4. Complete Foreign Language Placement Exams, if you plan to pursue a language as a minor or second major.

Phase Two: Complete Orientation Courses for MSU and LBC

  1. Complete the MSU New Student Orientation Course in May to proceed to the next step. Log in to Desire2Learn (D2L) with your MSU NetID and password, and complete the New Student Orientation Experience.
  2. Confirm your major as Lyman Briggs in the pre-advising section the end of the D2L course. Do not change your major at this point, or you will inadvertently take yourself out of our college and will not be able to meet with our advisors or enroll in our courses! After you start classes in the fall, you'll have the opportunity to change to a more specific major within Briggs.
  3. Complete the LBC Orientation sessions on this site at least one week before your academic advising appointment.
  4. Complete and submit LBC NSO Homework at least one week before your LBC academic advising appointment.

Phase Three: Set Your Advising Appointment and Attend It

Set the Appointment:

  1. Once you have completed the MSU New Student Orientation D2L course, confirming your major as Lyman Briggs at the end of the course, you can set an appointment with an LBC advisor.
  2. Log in to student.msu.edu and sign up for your Academic Advising Appointment with reason “NSO Advising.”

Attend the Appointment

  • Make sure you've completed LBC orientation sessions and homework one week BEFORE your appointment.
  • Send your official high school transcript, as well as any college transcripts to MSU.
  • Make sure you've sent all official exam scores to MSU (e.g. AP/IB/Dantes/CLEP).
  • Plan to be on a computer to be able to screen share and have a robust conversation with your academic advisor after you book your appointment. Visit https://msu.zoom.us for the Zoom service available for MSU students, faculty and staff. Click on the Login button and use your MSU NetID/password.
