What is Lyman Briggs College?

Lyman Briggs College (LBC) is the science-focused, undergraduate, degree-granting residential college at Michigan State University. We are dedicated to innovative and inclusive teaching, research, and engagement with the sciences in their diverse human, social, and global contexts.

At LBC, students are surrounded by faculty and peers who are equally passionate about science and its social contexts. We offer small classes and personalized academic advising, career advising, and mentoring. All first-year LBC students live and learn in Holmes Hall and many return their second year.

Learn Science in Community

At LBC, you’ll take foundational courses in math, chemistry, biology, and physics in small classes, labs, and recitations—all in the same building where you’ll live your first year. Chances are, your hallmate will also be your classmate. You’ll build a strong understanding of key scientific and computational concepts, explore how disciplines connect, and learn alongside peers who live just down the hall.

Science in Context

Our unique Science and Society curriculum complements the practical scientific skills you learn in LBC STEM courses, with a view of science and its social, historical, and philosophical connections. You’ll gain critical thinking, research, and science communication skills that prepare you for a world shaped by innovation and debate. For those who wish to go deeper, we offer a Science and Society major and minor, and administer the MSU Bioethics minor.
