We are excited to share an incredible opportunity designed just for incoming Briggs students: the Briggs Summer Scholars Program.

Thanks to the generous support of LBC alumni, this program gives up to 30 students the chance to:

  • Complete MTH 103: College Algebra or LB 117: Functions and Trigonometry tuition-free this summer
  • Get a head start on coursework needed for chemistry and calculus classes in a Briggs student's first year
  • Connect with fellow Briggs students, faculty, and mentors before fall
  • Move into campus early and enjoy special events before Welcome Week even begins!

About the course

MTH 103 and LB 117 are key stepping stones for science and math coursework at MSU. By taking it over the summer, you’ll be ready to jump straight into chemistry and calculus in the fall. The course will be taught by Prof. Davis (MTH 103) and Dr. Chuck Fessler (LB 117), Lyman Briggs faculty members known for creating supportive and innovative online learning experiences. Plus, you’ll have the help of Undergraduate Learning Assistants who are there to guide you every step of the way!

Class schedule:

•    Online via Zoom
•    Mondays & Wednesdays, 10:20 a.m. – 12:40 p.m., Eastern
•    July 1 – August 15

About the Welcome Experience

After the online course concludes, all Briggs Summer Scholars will move into the residence hall early on August 16 for a special welcome experience. They'll enjoy:

  • Dinner with the Dean
  • Meet-and-greet with Briggs alumni and faculty
  • Academic success workshops
  • Fun social events with peer mentors and fellow Briggs Summer Scholars

By the time Fall Welcome kicks off on August 19, Briggs Summer Scholars will feel right at home at Briggs and MSU—with new friends, faculty connections, and a confident start!

Who’s eligible?

To qualify, incoming LBC students must complete the MSU Math Placement Assessment as part of New Student Orientation, and place into MTH 103 (score of 1–11) or LB 117 (score of 12-18). Once they've met this requirement, they can apply for the Briggs Summer Scholars program via Qualtrics. The deadline to apply is May 28.

We hope you apply to be part of this supportive, fun, and rewarding summer experience. Don’t miss this chance to get ahead and start building your Briggs community!
