In summer 2026, we interviewed three faculty members to learn more about their Briggs experience, what they enjoy about their roles, and interesting facts or initiatives here in the college. Our thanks to Amit Chitre, our Advance U intern, who interviewed faculty.
Interview with Andrea Kelley, Ph.D., LMSW, assistant professor in the Science and Society group.
What originally drew you to Lyman Briggs?
Well, I’m coming in for the other school in Michigan so not that big of a switch, but my work has always been centered around health, medicine, and society, so Lyman Briggs felt like a great fit. I really liked the college's approach and the opportunity to work with pre-health students while bringing together sociology, social work, and medical education in both my teaching and research.
What has been the most meaningful part of your Briggs experience?
Working with students has definitely been the best part. I enjoy teaching courses that encourage students to think about medicine and healthcare beyond the science by looking at the social issues that shape them.
Mentoring undergraduate researchers has also been really rewarding because I get to watch students grow as researchers and future healthcare professionals.
Are you currently involved in any research projects or initiatives?
Right now, most of my research focuses on medical education, specifically looking at how cisnormativity and cissexism shape medical schools. More broadly, I'm interested in finding ways to make healthcare education inclusive for LGBTQ+ students and patients.
What excites you most about this work?
One of my favorite assignments is having students create informational pamphlets on a topic they're passionate about. I love giving them the creative freedom to express themselves while exploring issues that matter to them. It's exciting to see the range of topics they choose and how they use their own voices to communicate important ideas
Can you share a memorable, inspiring or rewarding moment in your work with Briggs students?
One of the most rewarding experiences has been mentoring undergraduate researchers. Seeing students take ownership of their projects and watching those projects earn first place in Sociology at the University Undergraduate Research and Arts Forum was really exciting.
Are there any programs, opportunities or initiatives that you think LBC alumni should know more about?
I think more people should know about the undergraduate research opportunities at Briggs. Students have the chance to work closely with faculty on meaningful projects while gaining experience that prepares them for graduate school, healthcare, and research careers.
