Open to all alumni

Briggs Career Chats connect LBC alumni with current Briggsies through brief career conversations.   
 
In the Chats, LBC alumni talk with current students one-on-one about their careers, time in Briggs, challenges, accomplishments, etc. Alumni have the opportunity to expand a student's view of what a particular career would be like and provide valuable insights as a Briggsie.

Student participants sign up to talk with specific alumni, and are prepared with questions to ask. It's meant to be a simple, structured and enjoyable conversation for both of you. Interactions typically run about 15 minutes per chat.

Chats in the past have been designated by area of interest: Careers in Healthcare and Scientific Careers. We welcome you and your story!

Expectations: 

• Log on 15 minutes before the program begins for a brief orientation
• Share how your time in Briggs prepared you for your future career
• Provide insight into your specific industry or career.

Classroom Panel Opportunities

Open to all alumni

Virtual Classroom Alumni Panels bring alumni expertise and experience to the classroom. Your participation can help our students explore a variety of topics related to STEM fields, career paths, and life beyond Lyman Briggs.

We hope our panels reflect the diverse journeys of our alumni - from traditional STEM roles to unexpected career pivots. By sharing your story, you’ll not only highlight the many paths a Briggs education can lead to, but also provide students with encouragement, perspective, and inspiration as they prepare for their own futures.

Panels are set during different class times throughout the semester. 

Provide career insights to one student in a longer conversation

Conduct an Informational Interview

Open to all alumni

Students have the opportunity to engage in career exploration in introductory Briggs courses. Part of this includes completing an informational interview assignment with a Briggs alum. We ask students to have a 30-60 minute conversation with an alum to learn more about different careers in the sciences, gain a better understanding of how to pursue those careers, and begin to develop their network through connecting with industry professionals.

Expectations:

• Participate in a virtual 30 to 60-minute meeting with a student
• Share career journey with students
• Complete interest form

Help Students Practice Interviewing for Med School

Facilitate Multiple Mini Interviews for students

Open to medical school students or graduates

For Multiple Mini Interviews, we invite LBC alumni to interview students one-on-one, preparing them for their medical school application process. Guide students through answering sample questions, provide insight on interview tactics, and help them develop strategies for interview success. Students will sign up to participate in advance and we will facilitate rotations every 10 minutes to ensure students can interview with several alums.

Expectations of your role:

• Log on 15 minutes before program begins for a brief orientation
• Ask one pre-determined simulation question to each student
• Provide feedback on the student's response
• Submit feedback to Career Services Consultant

Review Personal Statements

Review Medical School or Grad School Personal Statements

Open to alumni with med school or grad school experience

Lyman Briggs College has many students headed to medical school and graduate school, and we are looking to our alumni to help guide them as they begin the application process. All medical school and grad school graduates (and current students in those programs) are invited to participate in preparatory programs aimed at helping Briggsies stand out in their personal statements. Your first-hand knowledge is so valuable to our students, please consider taking the time to pass your expertise on to the next generation of Briggsies! 

Expectations: 

• Available for 4 hours to offer virtual support/guidance.
• Provide written and verbal feedback on personal statements.
• Engage in meaningful conversations with students.
• Review orientation video prior to volunteering.

Help Briggsies build interviewing skills

Facilitate General Mock Interviews

Open to all alumni

For General Mock Interviews, we invite LBC alumni to interview students one-on-one, preparing them for official interviews post-graduation. Our Briggsies are preparing to interview for jobs, graduate school, and medical programs. These general interviews will help students navigate common interview questions, talk about interview strategies and answer questions related to the interview process. Predetermined interview questions will be provided. 

Expectations of your role: 

• Log on 15 minutes before the program begins for a brief orientation.
• Ask a pre-determined set of questions to one student.
• Provide feedback on the student's response.
• Submit feedback to Career Services Consultant.
