We’re always eager to welcome alumni back to Holmes Hall, as well as to connect on alums’ home turf. Below are a few opportunities to volunteer at Lyman Briggs, in an in-person capacity.

Evaluate Student Research at the LBC Showcase
Open to all alumni and community partners
Each spring, we invite LBC students to present their research in a special Briggs-only showcase. Student presentations and posters are evaluated for awards, by a team of alums and community partners representing a variety of career fields.
Details:
- Attend the Research Showcase (typically in February, one weeknight)
- Review online presentations and/or listen to assigned in-person presentations
- Select top candidates for awards
- The event is a great way to learn about the research going on across campus and to witness Briggsies’ scientific knowledge and communication skills.
- This is also a chance to come back to Holmes Hall and meet or reconnect with other alumni.
Volunteer at the LBC Commencement Ceremony
Open to all alumni
Each spring, approximately 300-350 Briggsies graduate with pomp, circumstance and Spartan spirit in in our Lyman Briggs Commencement Ceremony at the Breslin Center. We love introducing the newest alumni to the wider LBC alumni family. This is a fun time to return to campus, reconnect with Lyman Briggs College, and reminisce about your days as a graduating senior.
Details:
- Dates and times vary by year, but the ceremonies are typically on Saturdays or Sundays in late April or early May and last about 2 hours. The whole commitment is about 3 hours.
- Location: Jack Breslin Student Events Center, 534 Birch Rd, East Lansing, MI 48824
- Volunteer role: Help prep graduating students to cross the stage and shepherd them back to their seats.
Host a Briggs Alumni Workplace Visit
Open to all alumni
Briggs Alumni Workplace Visits give LBC students the opportunity to get out of the classroom and into the real world, to better understand career paths after college and meet some of our accomplished alumni.
Past visits include:
- Briggs alum Dr. Jeffrey VanWingen took students on a tour of his medical practice. He described what owning a practice entails, listed the unique job responsibilities, and shared some lessons he learned along the way.
- Briggs alum Ashima Saigal invited students to her home. She shared how her career journey started in a computer consulting firm then evolved to her establishing her own database company using meditation and yoga.
- Briggs alum Dr. Molly Crissman invited students to visit her medical office, opening with a day-in-the-life presentation, followed by tours of an imaging lab and surgery center.
Host a Briggs Meetup in your area
Open to all alumni
Want to connect with fellow Lyman Briggs alumni in your area? Consider hosting a Briggs Meetup! Briggs Meetups are informal, alumni-led gatherings designed to bring Briggsies together wherever they live. Whether you’re reconnecting with familiar faces or meeting fellow alumni for the first time, it’s an easy way to build community around the shared experience of being a Briggsie.
Meetups can be as simple or creative as you’d like. Gather a group for trivia or a game night, meet up at a local restaurant or brewery, explore a museum, attend a community event, take a tour of a local attraction or plan another activity you think fellow alumni would enjoy. The goal is to have fun and connect.
You bring the idea, and we can help spread the word. If you’re interested in hosting, let us know what you have in mind and where you’re located. The Lyman Briggs advancement team can help contact Briggs alums in your area.
