Finding Community

College is more than classes and labs—it's about connections. At MSU, there are countless ways to get involved, meet others who share your interests, and build a sense of belonging. Here are some ways to branch out and find your community.

Tips for Finding Community

Be Open to New Experiences

While you are at MSU, take the opportunity to explore your interests. There’s always something happening on campus (often involving free food!) and chances are that there’s also a group of potential friends just waiting for you to join.

Attend Events in Holmes Hall

Attend events organized by the Resident Assistants and Intercultural Aides! One of the benefits to living in a residential college is connecting with other Briggsies in and out of the classroom. RAs and ICAs organize events for you and your floormates; let your RA know if you have ideas, and be sure to show up!

Start a Study Group

Briggs students are always studying for one class or another and many share a similar course schedule at one time. Try inviting your classmates to study with you and stay in touch when the semester comes to a close.

Get Involved in an Org or Club

Use events like Sparticipation and the Involve@State website as starting points in exploring various registered student organizations. What did you enjoy doing in high school, outside of class? What haven’t you tried yet that sounds interesting? If you have an interest that you don’t see reflected in an RSO yet, you could start one yourself!

Give Back

Give back! Maybe you want to support other students on campus or members of the Greater Lansing community. You could check out the University Activities Board or Residence Hall Association to assist in planning events, or you could find an opportunity to provide community service through Spartans Volunteer, through the MSU Center for Community-Engaged Learning.

Get Active

There are all kinds of ways to meet other students while staying active, whether through a one-time event, playing an intramural or club sport, or checking out the IM buildings to work out across campus. Find out more on the Recreational Sports and Fitness Services website.

Connect Through People You Know

Finding a community that feels like home may take time, so use your resources and previously established connections to find something that speaks to you. If your roommate is attending an event for a group you’ve never heard of—ask if you can tag along! If you don’t like it, you still might meet someone you connect with otherwise.
