Biography

Clausell Mathis is an assistant professor at Michigan State University where he has a joint appointment with Lyman Briggs College and the Department of Teacher Education. At Lyman Briggs College he teaches physics and the senior capstone course. His research interests include examining how physics instructors can optimally incorporate culture- based equitable approaches in the classroom where teachers leverage students cultural resources and build connections to physics phenomena. He earned his Ph.D at Florida State University, and did his postdoc at the University of Washington, Seattle, working with the Physics Education Group. Before earning his Ph.D., Dr. Mathis was a high school physics teacher, community college physics professor, and did research in the area of cellular and molecular biophysics.

Education

  • Postdoctoral Research Associate, Physics Education Group, University of Washington, Seattle
  • Ph.D., Florida State University, Curriculum & Instruction - Science Education

Research

Clausell's research focuses on understanding how physics teachers can effectively incorporate culture-based pedagogical approaches to instruction. His research consists of three projects: (1) development of physics curricula, where teachers use students cultural resources as a tool for helping them learn physics ideas; (2) examining physics teacher identity towards equity, where we attempt to understand how teachers conceptions play a role in their teaching towards equity; and (3) student sense-making, where we investigate the process of how students reason through physics ideas when they are vexed around an idea towards achieving understanding, and how the use of student cultural resources can impact that process.

MSU physics education professor recognized with prestigious national fellowship

Clausell Mathis, assistant professor of physics and physics education in Michigan State University’s Lyman Briggs College and Department of Teacher Education, has been named a Winter 2026 Fellow of the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT). He is one of only two educators nationwide to receive this honor.

LBC Campaign Priorities

LBC continues to enhance student success through inclusive and interdisciplinary teaching and advising. We aim to raise support for high-impact learning experiences, which deeply engage students and transform lives. By providing personalized support and equitable access to these opportunities, LBC will help all students succeed and prepare for their future careers.

Goal: $6 million

LBC’s faculty are true teacher-scholars who center the student experience while achieving scholarly excellence. Investing in faculty through endowed positions and honorifics strengthens our foundation of excellence and drives our vision to transform what it means to be a scientist. By elevating our faculty’s work, we are shaping a legacy of excellence that will transform education’s future.

Goal: $3.4 million

LBC was founded as, and continues to be, a home for interdisciplinarity. We are expanding interdisciplinary research that fosters collaboration and includes diverse experiences and perspectives in local to global discovery and applications. Our research initiatives will drive innovative projects, support student and faculty knowledge production and application, and strengthen MSU’s leadership in academic excellence and global impact.

Goal: $1.2 million

As MSU’s largest residential, degree-granting college, LBC is dedicated to ensuring that everyone sees themselves as a Briggsie and that all who are admitted are provided with what they need to thrive. We’ll expand secondary-school outreach to inspire future scientists, enhance Briggs’ first-year experience with programs in career exploration and leadership development, and improve facilities to recruit, retain and empower diverse talent.

Goal: $1.4 million
