There are a number of university programs for students that provide additional opportunities and support. The following programs are available to eligible incoming LBC students in addition to all of the support that Lyman Briggs College provides in our college setting. Explore these opportunities below!

Cohort and Affinity Programs
MSU Honors College
The MSU Honors College is home to a culturally vibrant group of high-achieving students with multiple academic interests. Honors College students enjoy additional flexibility in planning their degrees. Admitted MSU students are automatically considered for the Honors College, and those who qualify eligible receive an invitation from the Honors College roughly 6-8 weeks after submitting their completed MSU application.
Eligibility:
- GPA or class rank that places students within the top 5% in their class
- A high number of rigorous AP, IB, or dual enrollment courses within the context of what a student’s school provides
- Community service involvement and research interests
- Average scores of 1450 SAT or 32 ACT
- Receives an invitation from the MSU Honors College 6-8 weeks after applying to MSU
LBC students who are also members of the Honors College may opt to live on the Honors floor of Holmes Hall.
Detroit M.A.D.E. Scholars Program
The Detroit Mastering Academics Demonstrating Excellence (Detroit M.A.D.E.) Scholars Program focuses on college transition, graduation and career development for students who have graduated from Detroit public and charter high schools and/or reside in the city of Detroit.
Detroit M.A.D.E. students participate in annual community service projects; are exposed various internship opportunities, and education abroad experiences all connected to the city of Detroit and underserved populations. They also engage in peer mentoring, coaching and advising.
Eligibility:
- Be an admitted first-year student to Michigan State University.
- Be a resident of Detroit OR graduate of a public or charter high school in Detroit.
- Complete math placement test and surveys by established deadlines.
TRIO Student Success Services
The TRIO Student Support Services program at Michigan State University is committed to the success of students from diverse backgrounds who are first-generation, income eligible, and students with disabilities. Students in the program enjoy personalized support through dedicated peer mentors and academic advisors, academic assistance with common courses, financial literacy guidance, and special programs.
Eligibility:
A student is eligible by being a U.S. citizen and by meeting one of the following three requirements:
- First-Generation status (the parent or guardian with whom the student resides has not completed a four-year bachelor’s degree)
- Income Eligible (a student’s family’s taxable income for the preceding year did not exceed 150% of the federal poverty level)
- Documented Disability (i.e. IEP in K-12 and/or accommodations from the MSU Resource Center for Persons with Disabilities (RCPD) for a learning, physical, or mental disability)
Eligible, admitted LBC students participate in TRIO SSS by applying for the program.
FLI Vanderploeg Scholars Program
The First-Generation Leadership and Innovation (FLI) Vanderploeg Scholars Program provides first-generation college students at MSU with opportunities to develop leadership skills and become innovators in their chosen field through support and funding.
FLI Vanderploeg Scholars gain access to a supportive community, funding for transformative learning experiences, annual scholarships, personalized advising and coaching, peer mentoring, and opportunities for leadership and professional development.
Eligibility:
- U.S. citizen
- Identify as a first-gen student (neither parent or guardian completed a four-year college or university degree)
- Be an incoming first-year undergraduate student
- Agree to fully participate and engage in the program
