Academic Support

Briggsies have a built-in study network of peers who live nearby, professors who have offices in the building, and a robust program of undergraduate learning assistants to help support learning in class. But across campus there are also many other departments that support specific learning.

Help Rooms and Tutoring at MSU

When you need help in a course talk to the professor, the graduate teaching assistant or the undergraduate learning assistant. Visit office hours! Ask classmates questions! Below are many support services, help rooms and tutors throughout campus.

Biochemistry and Molecular Biology provides a list of private fee-based tutoring for students enrolled in BMB 401, 461, 462.

The Biological Sciences Program offers free help room assistance for students enrolled in certain intro Biological Science courses (BS 161, BS 162) 

The Department of Chemistry offers free help room assistance to students enrolled in CEM 141, 142, 161 and 162. There is also a list of chemistry tutors for hire available.

The English Language Center provides instruction to international students who need to improve their English language skills before beginning academic course work. The ELC serves the international community by providing English language instruction against a backdrop of American life and academia.

The Math Learning Center (located in D-101 Wells Hall or in the Neighborhoods) provides walk-in assistance to students enrolled in all 100 and 200 level math courses and limited assistance in upper-level math courses. In addition, the MLC also provides practice tests, group study sessions, exam reviews, and lists for-hire tutoring. The LBC Math Help Room is in Holmes Hall, Room C-9, from 5-10 p.m., Sundays through Thursdays. 

The Department of Physics has the Strosacker Learning Center, also known as the physics help room, located on the ground floor of the Biomedical and Physical Sciences building, Rm 1248.

The College of Social Science's Office of Student Success offers a variety of free support options in selected social science courses like Economics. 

The Statistics Learning Center provides drop-in tutoring to students enrolled in selected STT courses: STT200, STT201, STT315, STT351, STT380, STT421, STT422, STT430, STT441 & STT442.

The Writing Center offers one-on-one peer writing consultations, writing workshops, and creative writing groups. Help collaborating on short stories, PowerPoint presentations, emails, school essays, applications, resumes, book reports or anything else. The Writing Center offers appointments both in-person and online. Walk-ins are accepted if space is available. 

The closest Neighborhood location is East Hubbard, Room 182B, Tuesday, 5:00 p.m.– 9:00 p.m. and Thursday, 5:00 – 8:00 p.m.

The Academic Success Workshop Program provides timely, relevant student success workshops for students to aid them in achieving success at MSU. Some workshops topics include time management and organization for learning, orienting to success, and study skills and learning techniques.

The Office of Student Success in the College of Social Science has a number of Student Success Guides on a variety of helpful topics.

Researching and Citing Sources

The Library Peer Research Advisors are a free service provided by the MSU Libraries. They provide help and tutoring in a variety of areas, including:

  • Finding information or sources for research papers
  • Identifying different types of materials, like articles or books
  • Developing search strategies
  • Evaluating sources
  • Understanding citation styles and creating citations
  • Making connections to further library services
