Three Briggs seniors nominated for the prestigious Marshall Scholarship

This fall, three Briggs seniors were among ten MSU students nominated for the prestigious Marshall Scholarship. They are:

  • Caroline Downes, a double major in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and Anthropology, from Berkley High School in Berkley, Michigan. 
  • Ashley Harlock, another double major in Neuroscience and Human Biology from Churchill High School in Livonia, Michigan. 
  • Tanvi Karkare, majoring in Cognitive and Computational Neuroscience from Canton High School in Canton, Michigan.

The Marshall Scholarship gives up to 50 students annually the opportunity to study for graduate school in the United Kingdom in any field of study. This scholarship is one of the most prestigious scholarships in the nation and has a highly competitive application process. The scholarship funds study at a UK institution for one to two academic years. The program aims for Scholars to gain an understanding of Britain and promote academic achievement. MSU has produced 19 Marshall Scholars in the past.

The other MSU undergraduate nominees include:

  • Alissa Hakim, double majoring in the Arts and Humanities in the Residential College of the Arts and Humanities and Political Theory and Constitutional Democracy in James Madison College, from Crestwood High School in Dearborn Heights, Michigan
  • Kyleen Hall, majoring in Microbiology in the College of Natural Science, from Lincoln Way West High School in New Lenox, Illinois.
  • Brennan Haugen, double majoring in Human Biology in the College of Natural Science and Psychology in the College of Social Science, from Battle Creek Area Math and Science Center, and Lakeview High School in Battle Creek, Michigan. 
  • Maren Nicolaysen, double majoring in International Relations in James Madison College and Economics in the College of Social Science, from Kelly Walsh High School in Casper, Wyoming.
  • Megan Smejkal, majoring in Political Science, Economics, and History in the College of Social Science, from Prospect High School in Mount Prospect, Illinois. 
  • Isaac Smith, majoring in Physics, and Advanced Mathematics in the College of Natural Science, from West Bloomfield High School in West Bloomfield, Michigan. 
  • Dorothy Zhao, double majoring in Neuroscience, and Human Biology in the College of Natural Science and Psychology in the College of Social Science, from Okemos High School in Okemos, Michigan. 

The two MSU alumni nominated are:

  • Zahra Ahmad, a 2022 graduate who majored in Comparative Cultures and Politics in James Madison College,from Troy High School in Troy, Michigan. 
  • Caitlin (CJ) Sivak, a 2023 graduate who majored in Urban and Regional Planning in the College of Social Science; and Linguistics in the College of Arts and Letters, from Clarkston High School in Clarkston, Michigan. 

All nominees are also a part of the Honors College, which offers the Distinguished Student Awards Office (formerly National/International Fellowships & Scholarships). The office aids both undergraduates and graduates in providing information and support through award application processes.
