U.S. News & World Report gives MSU highest ranking in seven years

U.S. News & World Report continues to rank several Michigan State University programs among the top in the nation with the release of its 2023 edition of Best Colleges.

MSU’s overall rank improved six places from last year, tied for No. 77, up from a tie for No. 83. This is MSU’s highest rank in seven years. MSU also moved up two places among public universities to tie for No. 31. The university now has a total of 40 undergraduate and graduate programs ranked in the top 25 by U.S. News.

“Michigan State continues to demonstrate excellence in our academics with highly ranked programs that provide a personalized educational experience,” said MSU President Samuel L. Stanley Jr., M.D. “Students come to MSU confident they will work with high-quality faculty in exceptional programs that support their success to graduation and beyond.”

For the 12th consecutive year, MSU’s undergraduate supply chain management program — housed within the Eli Broad College of Business — ranks No. 1 among U.S. public and private universities. The Broad College’s graduate program in supply chain has held the No. 1 ranking in the nation for the past six years.

“We are honored by our No. 1 ranking in supply chain management, No. 13 ranking among U.S. publics and top 25 overall, which speak to the unwavering commitment to excellence that our faculty, staff and students maintain,” said Judith Whipple, interim dean of the Broad College. “Recent world events have shown the importance of supply chain and Spartans are ready to take on the challenges of today and the future.”

U.S. News & World Report ranks the following MSU undergraduate programs in the nation’s top 25:
  • No. 1: Supply chain management
  • No. 5: Production/operations
  • No. 6: Agricultural engineering
  • No. 9: Game development (MSU’s first appearance in this ranking)
  • No. 11: Management
  • No. 22: Marketing
  • No. 23: Management information systems
  • No. 23: Undergraduate business
  • No. 25: Accounting
The university’s favorability ranking in several student engagement categories also increased in this report.
  • For the fourth year in a row, MSU’s learning communities are ranked No. 4 overall and No. 1 among public institutions.
  • Education Abroad improved two spots to No. 9 and remained No. 1 among public four-year institutions.

  • Service-learning also is ranked No. 9, up from No. 13, and is No. 2 among public institutions.

“It is rewarding to see that Michigan State University’s learning communities maintained their No. 1 ranking among four-year public universities, and No. 4 ranking overall,” said MSU Provost Teresa K. Woodruff, Ph.D. “MSU’s three residential colleges and additional living-learning communities support student success through experiential learning and help foster a sense of inclusion and belonging across campus.”
