  • Sean Healey Endowed Memorial Award Fund for Honors Writing in the LBC

    About the Fund

Sean Healey was a Lyman Briggs computer science major who died after his sophomore year in 1992 due to complications associated with muscular dystrophy. Sean was a gifted writer and avid reader who had a great thirst for knowledge. This award goes to a first-year student who displays the same engagement, intelligence and skills Sean displayed in his first year. The award is based on the cumulative highest grade for papers as well as outstanding participating in the LBC Honors Writing course as determined by the faculty responsible for the course.

Students following in Sean’s footsteps should never cease their thirst for knowledge through reading, including leisure reading. Don’t let any situation interfere in that quest for knowledge.

A Conversation About Sean Healey

Can you tell us more about Sean his years at Lyman Briggs and any other information to celebrate his life?
Sean was a computer science major at Lyman Briggs from Fall 1990-Spring 1992. He passed away in July 1992 due to complications associated with Muscular Dystrophy. Sean was a gifted writer and avid reader with a great thirst for knowledge. His personal library consisted of over 500 books.

What about Sean's time in Lyman Briggs sticks out to you most?
He loved Spartan football and basketball. He also enjoyed listening to jazz music on WKAR radio every Friday night, hosted by one of his former high school teachers. Since his favorite reading genre was fantasy and science fiction, Sean was elated to find out the reading materials for Dr. Shelton’s Honors Writing course would be science fiction. He had great camaraderie with his Lyman Briggs classmates. Two years after his passing his Class of 1994 dedicated their LBS graduation luncheon to Sean in memoriam.

What inspired you to create a scholarship in his name?
We wanted to create a scholarship that would serve as a lasting memory of Sean’s love of reading and exceptional writing skills. Students following in Sean’s footsteps should never cease their thirst for knowledge through reading, including leisure reading. Don’t let any situation interfere in that quest for knowledge. Even though Sean was physically handicapped, traversing the halls of Holmes Hall in his motorized wheelchair, that did not deter him from pursuing his dreams and ambitions.
