SURIEM REU

2024 Summer Undergraduate Research Institute in Experimental Mathematics (SURIEM)

Lyman Briggs College at Michigan State University will be hosting a summer Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) in mathematics in 2024. This program is supported by Michigan State University (MSU), the National Security Agency (NSA), and the National Science Foundation (NSF).

Program Details:

The 2024 SURIEM REU program will be held in-person. Students will spend eight weeks working with faculty at Michigan State University in the Lyman Briggs College, the Department of Mathematics, the Department of Statistics and Probability, and the Department of Computational Mathematics, Science, and Engineering.

Program Dates:

May 20-July 12, 2024

Stipend:

Each student will receive a stipend of $4,800. Funding to participate in conferences is available through support from MSU, NSA, and NSF.

Who Should Apply:

The program is restricted to students who are U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or permanent residents, who have completed one year as a full-time undergraduate student, and who will be a full-time undergraduate student in the fall semester of 2024. Students who are from underrepresented groups, who have only completed one or two years of study of mathematics, and/or who attend colleges without access to large research departments are especially encouraged to apply.

Selection Details:

Preference will be given to applicants who are at an early stage of their study of mathematics, e.g. rising sophomores and rising juniors. Competitive applicants will have completed at least two semesters of calculus and one course which requires student to write mathematical proofs. Some experience with, or an interest in, learning how to write computer programs is desirable. Applications will be reviewed starting on March 1 and will continue to be reviewed until all positions have been filled.
