BIOGRAPHY

I completed my graduate work studying sexual conflict in fruit flies. My interest in this topic is rooted in my fascination for understanding how social experiences and genetics interact to shape the behaviors expressed by animals, and testing evolutionary hypotheses about when and how these flexible behaviors can be adaptive. During my time as a graduate student, I discovered my passion for communicating the importance of integrating evolutionary theory into our understanding of all areas within the life sciences. This led me to an interest in teaching, and ultimately toward working on the Evo-Med-Ed project at Lyman Briggs College. My primary goals in all the classes I teach are to help students gain an appreciation for integrating evolutionary perspectives into all sub-disciplines of biology, and to teach how evolutionary biology can be applied to help us better understand humans.

RESEARCH

At Lyman Briggs College, I am working on the Evo-Med-Ed (Evolutionary Medicine Education) project. The aim of this project is to use evolutionary medicine as a tool to improve student learning in undergraduate biology classes.

Broadly, our major objectives are:

  1. To generate curricular materials that promote:
    1. Interdisciplinary thinking across the biological sciences
    2. Understanding the importance of applying evolutionary principles in human biology
  2. To use pedagogically informed practices to help instructors bring active learning into the classroom by creating:
    1. Videos
    2. Learning objectives, case studies and question guides
    3. Interactive simulations
  3. To implement our materials in the classroom and evaluate their effect on student learning and engagement using the scientific method.
