Dean's Corner

By Elizabeth H. Simmons, June 20, 2016

Dear Members of the Lyman Briggs College community,

the Rock, painted by the LBGT Resource Center to honor the vistims

I am writing to share with you an open letter, written by my colleague and friend Prof. Michael Falk, about how we can support our LGBTQ students in the wake of the mass shooting in Orlando. He and I are both on the leadership team of the grass roots organization lgbt+physicists and he recently chaired the American Physical Society's Committee on LGBT Climate Issues in Physics, of which I was a member.

Being the parent of, the friend of, the colleague of, and the teacher of LGBTQ individuals, I believe it is important for us all to be aware of how the Orlando mass shooting may impact our students and to let them know they are valued and they belong in our community.

I ask that you please

  • read Michael's open letter, which outlines how our LGBTQ students may be affected
  • join me in taking MSU's online QUILL training (formerly called SafeZone) through the LBGT Resource Center
  • take a look at the Best Practices Guide created by lgbt+physicists for ideas on supporting LGBTQ students and colleagues in academia
  • read MSU President Simon's statement responding to the Orlando tragedy

If you would like to discuss any of these matters, do not hesitate to contact me.

Best regards,
