Academic
advisement is a very significant part of the Briggs program. Lyman Briggs
employs professional academic advisers, in addition to several faculty
members, to assist them and give direction in a general program.
One of the professional advisers or the Assistant to the Director is on
duty the majority of the time to talk with students and answer questions. The
relationships between students and their academic advisers are exceedingly
important. Their advisers can counsel them on long-range and semester-by-semester
academic and curricular plans, help them with scheduling courses, refer
them to resources on campus, discuss problems and concerns, and help them
obtain every advantage from their college experiences. It is the
students' responsibility to consult with their academic advisers regarding
their academic schedules each semester, to drop and add classes, and to
plan approved programs for graduation. The academic advisers can
also be persons with whom students build close relationships that can
be profitable and helpful in many ways during their college careers.
Students
are not assigned to specific advisors until they declare a major and are
assigned to an adviser in that major. If students change their areas
of academic interest, they should report this to the Briggs Office so
that appropriate advisers can be assigned and that their records recoded
to reflect the changes. Students should always feel free to request
changes of advisers.
