Lyman Briggs students graduate from the College of Natural Science with the Bachelor of Science degree. The core curriculum consists of biology; chemistry; computer science; mathematics; physics; science and technology studies; and a senior seminar; as well as the standard University requirements in arts and humanities; social, behavioral, and economic sciences; and writing. In addition, they complete either (1) a field of concentration within the College, or (2) a major in one of the traditional departments of the College of Natural Science or in Computer Science (College of Engineering).
LBC Fields of Concentration
The six fields of concentration offered by Lyman Briggs are: Biology; Earth Science; Environmental Sciences & Management; Science and Technology Studies; Physical Science; and Computer Science.
Generally a field of concentration affords a student a broader range of educational experience and, thus, greater flexibility than a major does. A field of concentration can also broaden the range of career opportunities. Because the first two years of study at Lyman Briggs emphasize a common core curriculum, students need not decide upon a specific field of concentration or coordinate major until the beginning of their junior year. This feature of the curriculum allows students to explore and become knowledgeable in several areas of study before committing themselves to specialization.
