Knowledge from the Margins Conference

Transportation and Lodging

The conference will be held in East Lansing, Michigan which is a small city and proto-typical college town. East Lansing has a small downtown area and great access to nightlife in Lansing (the state capital), beautiful parks and the Great Lakes, the famous (or infamously bankrupt) city of Detroit, and various smaller towns with their summer festivals. For 25 years, it has been named a “Tree City” by the Arbor Day Foundation – participants will appreciate the shade as they walk around during sunny August. The conference venue, the Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center, is located on the northwest part of MSU’s campus. This part of campus is bordered by Harrison Rd on the west side, and Michigan Ave/Grand River Ave on the north side.

There is good transportation available to conference participants. Airports include the Lansing Capital Airport which has a taxi stand and is only a 15-20 minute drive to East Lansing. A less expensive option would be to fly into the Detroit Metro Airport, and book the Michigan Flyer airport shuttle to East Lansing’s Marriott hotel. It is necessary to book the Michigan Flyer in advance as this air-conditioned coach bus with free bottled water and wi-fi occasionally fills up. The Michigan Flyer stops in Ann Arbor twice before arriving in East Lansing and thus adds approximately 2-3 hours to your travel time (see the schedule on their website).

Amtrak is a convenient and comfortable (but slower) option to get to MSU from the cities of Chicago, New York, Philadelphia, or Washington, D.C. The Lansing Amtrak station is just across Harrison Rd from the west side of MSU’s campus. Amtrak is walking distance to the Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center. Alternatively, from the Amtrak station, it is very convenient to take CATA Bus 20 north on Harrison Rd to the Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center. Several other hotels are also on the bus routes. However, the organizers encourage participants to book rooms at the Kellogg as doing so will help us to keep overall conference costs low.

The Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center is offering a special group rate of $105.00 per night to conference participants. This is a significant discount from their regular room rate of $129 - $173 per night. To reserve a room at the Kellogg at this rate, please contact them (1-800-875-5090) before July 20, 2015 and use the group code: KFM081914.

Childcare

We will be collecting information during registration to ask conference attendees if they require childcare. If there is a group of children anticipated, then perhaps we can come to some mutually beneficial arrangement for childcare among the parents. It will take some time to settle the details. Feel free to contact the conference organizer, Logan Williams, at will2734@msu.edu. Meanwhile, parents can arrange child care individually through the accredited daycare programs indicated by the MSU Family Resources Center: http://www.frc.msu.edu/Child_Care/Emergency.htm. School-age children might enjoy a summer camp offered through East Lansing Parks and Recreation (https://www.cityofeastlansing.com/874/Summer-Camps).
